At the Forefront of Change
CrossFit Medical Society (CFMS) is proud to announce the launch of CommunityCare, a healthcare alternative, where members directly fund each other's medical expenses, bypassing the expense and waste of the existing health insurance system. In partnership with CrowdHealth, a leading innovator in healthcare crowdfunding, CommunityCare is an expression of the unique design of the CrossFit community with the financial benefits of a streamlined healthcare option tailored specifically to the needs of health-conscious individuals.
Enrollment for CFMS CommunityCare is currently open to CrossFit affiliate owners and coaches, who will be the first to benefit from this innovative solution. All other CrossFit members are invited to join the waitlist, with more widespread enrollment planned for the near future.
“The CrossFit Medical Society has foundational pillars rooted in community and a belief that a person’s healthcare journey is their own,” said Dr. Tom McCoy, Co-Founder of the CrossFit Medical Society. “CommunityCare creates another layer to our ecosystem with a person-centered approach to healthcare. Our hope is that this partnership with CrowdHealth not only brings flexible and affordable healthcare to the affiliate owner and coach, but continues to highlight the value the affiliate brings to their community.”

Sean’s introduction to CrossFit first came through his wife Ronda who is also a physician, affiliate owner and coach. In 2007, Ronda’s yoga teacher was a woman named Heather Bergeron. She told her about this new thing called CrossFit and quickly they became hooked. They spent months using different gym spaces to do workouts at off hours. Eventually Heather’s husband Ben asked if they would like to be founding members of CF New England, they agreed and the rest is history.
Sean grew up in New England. A gym rat from an early age, he was recruited to play both football and baseball at Harvard where he completed his undergraduate training. After medical school and residency at Tufts University, He joined Orthopedics New England which today 25 years later has over 18 providers and three different offices with a surgery center .
Sean has held many different titles over the years with CrossFit, and has attended every Games as a medical volunteer since 2011. Currently he is the Head Orthopedic Surgeon for the CrossFit Games and has cared for numerous athletes over the course of his career. Sean also recently published an e-book called “Where does it Hurt” which is a great resource for coaches and other individuals struggling with musculoskeletal pain.
In 2016, Sean’s wife Ronda (who is also a physician and CrossFit coach), founded CF Launchpad, an affiliate based in their home garage. What initially started as an afterschool program for young girls subsequently turned into a full time affiliate with a busy class schedule and vibrant community.
Sean is an accomplished orthopedic surgeon who endorses the value of CrossFit with his patients. Should you need an evaluation, second opinion or surgery for an injury, he is someone you should speak with. He can be found on The Directory should you wish to contact his practice.
A Community in Need
The Aftermath of Hurricane Helene
CFMS members Heather Peters and Maggi Bridsell share their story from the destruction of Hurricane Helene.
Hurricane Helene devastated and affected millions of people’s lives across the Eastern U.S. Our Direct Primary Care office, Elevation Health, and CrossFit box, Ashe CrossFit, was one such business. We are located in rural West Jefferson, Ashe County, NC.
Elevation Health and Ashe CrossFit are owned by Heather Peters, FNP-BC, CF-L2 and Maggi Birdsell, RD, CDE, CF-L1. We operate as one entity offering primary care, nutrition, and fitness all under one roof. We currently serve 379 members, with 46% of our gym members also being primary care members.
Elevation Health/Ashe CrossFit had over a foot of Helene’s flood water inundate the building. Medical equipment and supplies, fitness apparatus and the physical structure were damaged by water and will have to be repaired or replaced.
Please consider this worthy Go Fund Me Campaign. All excess funds raised will be donated to Helene Ashe County recovery.

Podcasts and Information
A couple weeks ago CrossFit Training launched (revamped) their official YouTube Channel. There is some great content for coaches, would be coaches, and anyone who loves CrossFit. Nicole Carrol and Denise Thomas are legends. We highly recommend listening to the kick off episode (see below). Additionally, you’ll see some episodes with familiar faces like Jocelyn Rylee who led Grand Rounds a couple months ago. Speaking of Grand Rounds… Dr. Carla G killed it last month when she dove into hormone health. Check out the recording below!
